Florence is the ideal destination for those interested in studying humanities, art, Italian language and culture. Extraordinarily rich in history and ancient traditions, the city, with its world-famous artistic heritage, offers the student a wide spectrum of cultural events throughout the year. As a thriving economic center with particular strengths in the fashion, luxury goods and tourist sectors, the city of Florence also offers its inhabitants the chance to investigate myriad aspects of the contemporary Italian world. In addition, Florence is an excellent location for access to other sites and cities in Tuscany, Italy and Europe.

Lorenzo de'Medici – The Italian International Institute in Florence

Lorenzo de’ Medici is a private educational institution located in various campus buildings in the historic city center, right next to the thriving San Lorenzo market and church and close to transport facilities. Together the LdM Florence Campus buildings contain a full range of facilities including numerous classrooms and large, specialized art studios, a cafeteria, a courtyard garden, a library, the Student Point and the Computer Center. ALL LDM PREMISES ARE EQUIPPED FOR WIRELESS CONNECTION. 

For over 20 years, students from all around the U.S. and the rest of the world have enrolled at Lorenzo de Medici. Faculty in all fields of study are highly experienced and speak English and ALL COURSES ARE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES.

Course Offerings

Florence Program and Curriculum

The largest of the sites, The Florence Campus currently offers the most comprehensive programming. Students can study abroad for a year, a semester, or short-term programs in the summer.

Students that enroll at LdM come from all around the United States and the rest of the world to study Italian language, studio art, art history, Italian culture, and various other fields of study. No previous knowledge of Italian is required. The language of instruction is English, with the exception of the language classes. Classes are small, with strong emphasis placed on student-faculty interaction.

A 2.6 GPA, official transcripts, one letter of recommendation, and a statement of purpose are necessary for admission to the program. In addition, students must be 18 years old.

Students elect one of the following two programs for Summer Session I (June) & Summer Session II (July):

  • Program I: Super-Intensive Italian Language (6 credits)
    Students may register for a total of 6 credits of Italian language in this program.
  • Program II: Liberal Arts/Studio Art Program (6 credits)
    Students may register for a combination of any two courses. (3 credits per course). 
  • Program III: Liberal Arts/Studio Art Program (3 credits)
    Students register for a course of their choice for three credits.
  • Program IV: Workshops (6 credits)
    Take advantage of an opportunity for people of all ages and all nationalities wishing to develop their creative skills through an exciting cultural experience: LdM Summer Workshops. The LdM Summer Workshops provide an exciting opportunity for students of varying ages and backgrounds to deepen their personal cultural experience and creative skills. Each workshop is a month-long exploration, balancing studio and classroom instruction on the school premises in Florence with field work in one or more inspiring Italian location. Some examples of workshops that can be offered are: Florence and Tuscania Travel Writing and Literature Workshop / Florence and Chianti Restoration Workshop /Florence and Chianti Watercolor Workshop: Painting under the Tuscan Sun. Please consult the course schedule for workshops that are being offered.

*Please note: Summer Session III (August) concentrates its offering on Italian language courses only for credit.

Student Life

 HOUSING

*Housing is not included in the Program cost.

Single or Double Bedroom in a Student Apartment
LdM is pleased to facilitate students in making their housing arrangements for a spot in a student apartment. Most apartments have two or three bedrooms. A very limited number have only one bedroom, and some may have more than three bedrooms. Internet service is available.  

4 to 6 (or more) students generally share an apartment.
In a double bedroom two students share the bedroom.
In a single bedroom, the student has his/her own bedroom.
In all cases students share the apartment with several other students.
Apartment Description:

Apartments are furnished and equipped with: bed linens, basic pots and pans, kitchen utensils, washing machine and TV. Highspeed internet is available in the apartments.  Towels are generally not-included in the apartment and we recommend students to bring their own set of towels to Italy with them. Students can bring a few towels (not many) and buy them in Italy.
The student shared apartments are usually suitable for minimum of 2 to a maximum of 8 persons.
They are not all located in the same building, but within walking distance from the school facilities.
Although apartments are of the same standard and have similar facilities, no two apartments are alike.


*For housing arranged by LdM, the housing coordinator in Florence assigns roommates based on the completed housing profile. Students can request to room with a student they already know as long as both students make that request.

The cost per person is (costs are based on 2010 and therefore are subject to change):

Double bedroom: U.S. $ 950
Single bedroom: U.S. $ 1,150
